José M. Martínez-de-la-Casa holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the Complutense University of Madrid and a PhD in Medicine and Surgery from the same university. He is Head of the Glaucoma Department at Hospital Clínico San Carlos in Madrid, Full Professor of Ophthalmology at the Complutense University, and Director of the Multidisciplinary Research Group InnOftal at the Complutense University.
Other notable aspects of his training include a fellowship at the Hamilton Glaucoma Center, University of California San Diego, and a Master’s Degree in Medical Management and Clinical Leadership in 2011.
He is Secretary General of the Spanish Glaucoma Society and actively participates in the European and World Glaucoma Societies, having contributed to several consensus documents and guidelines on glaucoma promoted by these organizations. He is a member of the European Glaucoma Society’s Committee for Relations with the European Union and the Committee for Relations with National Societies.
Over the past 10 years, he has served as principal or co-investigator in nearly all clinical trials related to minimally invasive glaucoma surgery. He is the author of over 200 indexed journal publications and has contributed to more than 35 ophthalmology textbooks. He has supervised 33 doctoral theses. He is a member of the editorial board or reviewer for 19 ophthalmology journals. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Archivos de la Sociedad Española de Oftalmología and is former Editor-in-Chief of the Revista Española de Glaucoma e Hipertensión Ocular. He has delivered over 500 scientific presentations at national and international meetings and has received numerous awards. He was honored with the Arruga Award from the Spanish Society of Ophthalmology in 2008.
